Stock Market Music
Using a five-note scale spanning three octaves, pitch is determined by the daily closing numbers of the Dow Jones Industrial Average. The variance in volume mirrors the trading volume changes throughout the year. The notes are clustered in series of five, representing Mondays through Fridays. The weeks are punctuated, separated, and started by drum hits. Follow along with the graph to experience...

Ever have a night and not know if you slept?
I know I was up late working on my latest project. Jamie was working late on Christmas. We turned the lights out around 1:30 AM. We kept talking for a while. “Why aren’t we asleep?” It was about 2:30 when we stopped talking and Jamie seemed to drift off to sleep. I tossed and turned for a while. It kind of doesn’t seem like it but I think I might have been asleep when...
Sinusitis
Tuesday night I noticed a pain just above my left eye. By Wednesday my forehead hurt, especially around my eyes and especially when I moved my head. Ouch. It hurts a little just to remember. Thursday things didn’t change much, I rested in the morning but had “one” thing to do in the afternoon. That one thing turned into several and 6 hours later I was home and miserable. Friday...

100% bad copy
This label reads “100% Apple Juice from concentrate with added ingredient” which makes me very suspicious of this “added ingredient” what kind of cancer-causing preservative have they mixed in that needs to hide behind such a vague label? It turns out the mystery ingredient is ascorbic acid or Vitamin C. On what planet does is what they chose better than “100% Apple...

Photo Biz
I’m working diligently on my photography business website. It’s lacking all the important information but I’m liking how the front page is coming together. Each visitor will be greeted with a random image and a matching navigation bar that slides out from the side. It’s been very fulfilling working on it from scratch. Check it out: shotbydan.com
Now I need to put together...

Woodchipper
A good friend of mine created this 30 second commercial for Doritos annual “Crash the Superbowl” contest. http://bit.ly/woodchipper It’s amazing what some people can do with inexpensive tools, a solid vision, and a lot of know-how. Posted via email from I, Dan, | Comment »

Vist to Granpa Great
Asher’s Great Grandfather lives in a full-time care facility with Alzheimer’s. We visited yesterday with Asher’s Grandpa, aunt Lori, and cousins William & Zack. We don’t know how much he remembers or if he knows who we are but it seems that he knows we love him and appreciates our visits. Asher and William liked running up and down the hallway. We got suckers at...
Yard Work Time-Lapse
I decided to try some time-lapse today with my camera. I set it up to take a picture every 3 seconds and turned it into a video using ffmpeg. Download now or watch on posterous yard-8.mov (2161 KB) Steps: 1. Take pictures 2. Batch Rename (in Bridge: Number: 1 four digits) 3. Shrink images to 720p (Batch Action in Photoshop) 4. ffmpeg -r 8 -i %04d.jpg -sameq -s...
Camera Man Age 3
I was trying to take some pictures of Asher today but he wouldn’t listen to me. “Stand here” he’d walk over and stand until I stepped back to take a picture then he’d follow me. I gave up and started taking pictures of some flowers (yawn!). I looked up and he was sitting next to me holding some rocks in his hands. I got up and quickly moved around to the other side of...

No Pat No, Don't sit on that!
I read Asher “Hop on Pop” the other night. One of the characters “Pat” sat on things, (bat, hat, cat) and also is about to sit on a cactus and we read “No Pat No, Don’t sit on that” I told Asher that that was a cactus and it has sharp spikes that hurt you. Today after we watched Jamie in the Sound of Music we were running to the car (three hours in a theatre make jack a restless boy) and I...

20 Minutes Before Rain
Once the kids woke up we went to the park to see what this camera could do. It started raining soon after we got there so it was a pretty short shoot. Happy Gwen. (D700 50mm f/1.8 @ 2.2, 1/320, ISO 250) Asher totally climbed up this near-vertical slide; really cool. (D700 50mm f/1.8 @ 3.5, 1/100, ISO 250) Posted via email from I, Dan, | Comment »
New Photo Gear
My D700 arrived today. When the battery had finished charging the kids were napping… so what to use as the subject for my first picture? The Predecessor. Here is DAN_0001.jpg, the first picture taken with my D700: Not a very good picture. I turned the tables and took a few of the new kid on the block: I don’t care if it means I’m a geek for saying so: I love the look of this...
1/2, 1, 2, 4, 8, 16Gb
November 5, 2005 I purchased my first digital SLR camera. The original Canon Digital Rebel. I ordered a 512MB compact flash card for $70 to go with it. Periodically I’ve purchased larger cards as I’ve needed more space and as the prices have decreased. Today my 16GB card arrived and I was pleased to see a perfect doubling rate of storage capacity. Tomorrow my third SLR camera will be...
